| Summary Description: |
The Fort Canning Tunnel with 0.34 km length is part of the realignment of the Stamford Road and was constructed underneath the Fort Canning Park, the oldest Park in the City Center, where the reposeful and historical environment have to be protected.
On a length of 180m the tunnel was excavated according to the NATM the rest was constructed by cut & cover. The overburden ranged only between 3m and 9 m. The geological profile showed 1 - 2 m fill material at surface and beneath the so-called Fort Canning Boulder Bed, a stiff to hard Clay with embedded boulders up to a size of 3 m diameter.
The tunnel with an excavation area of 135 m², 15 m span and 11 m height was driven through the boulder bed. The main support measures were overlapping steel pipe roofs, 300mm shotcrete lining with a 150mm – 250mm thick temporary invert in the top heading, two layers of mesh and full round lattice girders.
For a watertight finishing a full-round PVC membrane and a reinforced inner lining were used.
