Summary Description: In December 2006 the Bonaventura consortium has been awarded the concession to finance, build and operate the first package of the “East Region Road Program”. The project is called “Ypsilon” and consists of sections of the S1, S2 and A5 (forming and epsilon) with about 51 km of highway and motorway.
In the section between the junction Eibesbrunn and the junction Korneuburg, the alignment of the S1 West crosses the Tradenberg, a mountain ridge of the Bisamberg Range, with a tunnel (two tubes) of 2.423,5m respectively 2457,6m length.
A specific characteristic of the Tradenberg Tunnel is its cross section. In a difference to most tunnels on Austrian motorways, the Tradenberg Tunnel has two lanes and an emergency lane throughout in each tube. The span width of the temporary lining is about 14m resulting in an excavation area of about 130sqm.
The tunnel is excavated in Flysch, a rock mass which a changing domination of marl/clay and sand-stone. This Flysch is among the Greifensteiner layer and occurs in two different formations. In the eastern section of the tunnel, we have the Altlengbach formation and in the western section the Ire-nental formation. In the middle section of the tunnel a very intense tectonic stressed shear zone is predicted.
In the NATM section with a total length of 2.763m, the top heading is running ahead, the ring closure (bench and invert) is done according to the geotechnical conditions. The geotechnical monitoring showed that a maximum distance of about 30m between top heading face and bench face is the best excavation procedure regarding excavation progress and displacement management. The excavation of the tunnel is done by using tunnel excavators, if necessary, additional blasting is carried out to loosen very compact areas.
The permanent lining of the 2.200m long open cut section has an arch profile and is constructed using reinforced watertight concrete.
At the end of 2007 the ARGE Tunnelbau – Alpine Bau GmbH has finished excavation of about half of the overall 2.763m long NATM section.
